I was reading the bible for passages on another topic and came across something that was pertinent to where I’m at today.
Proverbs 31:6-7 reads:
Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts. Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.
These verses immediately follow an admonition to kings and princes to not drink wine, lest they forget the law and pervert judgement.
From what I’m reading, it appears the proverb is saying drinking may result in poor judgement. However, strong drink may be OK for those who are ready to die or are mourning a loss because it helps them forget. Thankfully, neither of those situations describe me today. I love the life the Lord has provided, and currently am not in mourning.
Around 1993, I stopped drinking. I wanted to be more clear headed & in control. Then sometime about ten years later, bought a bottle of Jack after finishing first year law school finals. I continued to develop tastes over the years for both good beer and quality bourbon. I could pour finger of Blanton’s at the end of the day, and enjoy it for hours. However, early this summer my doctor said some things that scared me. So I decided to forego alcohol and embrace more exercise. I have more energy, sleep better, and am more motivated to improve my cardio. I am working hard to see improvements in health indicators. I want to see my grandchildren get married and great-grandchildren surround me. I do occasionally miss the evening pour, but I feel better all day, every day. So I continue to more closely watch what I put into my body.
I cannot say whether a heavy heart may cause me to drink again in the future. I know troubles will come. But hopefully, I’ll lean on the Lord more than a medication. I’m thankful to the Lord for His encouragement in scripture.
