This story comes from Medford, Oregon. Police were called a little before 5am for a person in mental distress. A person living in an apartment called saying the person in the neighboring apartment was screaming and behaving erratically. While officers were heading to the scene, it was reported that the erratic neighbor was trying to break in with an axe (presumably through the wall), causing the person inside that apartment to shoot. When police arrived, they found the axe-wielding neighbor suffering from a gunshot wound to an extremity.
This is a creative way to break in to a neighboring apartment. It does underscore how most apartment dwellers have only two layers of sheetrock between themselves and their (potentially unstable) neighbors. This case is also an interesting case study in self defense; the axe-wielding neighbor presumably was shot in his own home. I wonder if the shooter waited until the axe had broken through before taking the shot.
