What Are Weapon Light Keys?

Confused at what weapon light keys are and how to use them?

Light keys come standard from many light manufacturers. They attach between the light and the rail of your firearm. They typically determine how far forward or back your weapon light sits on the rail.

Light Keys for Streamlight TLR-7 and TLR-8

These keys are held in place by the screw of your Streamlight TLR-7 and 8, and come in different sizes, widths, and the like. They drastically change how your light fits on your pistol, and this means it can change how your pistol with a light fits into your holster. At Werkz, we often use the 1913-1 key (which fits onto the Glock 19 and 17 Gen 5 rail), or the Univ-1 (which fits onto the Glock 19 and 17 Gen 3 and 4 rail).

The same is for the TLR-1, which has keys like the GL key, and the Sig key. In the photo below, we’ve circled the key so you can see what it looks like attached to the light:

The GL key is the most often used for Glock holsters, which is what we build our holsters to work with.

Any light you purchase should come with a key guide in it’s user manual. But a good rule of thumb is to use whichever key that places your light closest to the trigger guard.

We use the standard light keys for all pistols, but if you ever have questions, we include what we build with on our website and can also answer any questions via our email: products@werkz.com !
