From news reports here and here, it seems a number of people were under a carport playing cards near Midnight when Kailan Sanders came up, immediately shot one man, and demanded the property of those playing cards. Sanders was reportedly armed with an AK-47. However, this is extremely unlikely — read this article for a little background on the AK versus AKM.
One person was apparently armed, and shot back in self defense, killing Sanders.
It seems as if Sanders had the drop on everyone. It can be very difficult to draw while seated and deliver accurate shots on target before the rifle-armed robber can identify what is happening and shoot the defender. I suspect the defender was either not at the card table, or managed to discretely draw & get rounds on target quickly. This story implies that mastery of the covert draw can be a life-saver.
