Online Sale Is Ambush

This last weekend in Columbia South Carolina, a purported “online sale” went horribly wrong. It seems two individuals were posing as buyers, but instead were planning to rob their victim instead. Reported facts are thin, but it appears one of the two robbers was spotted before the incident walking through a local backyard with a rifle.

The attackers allegedly led the victim to believe they were making an online purchase. Instead of a transaction of goods, the suspects attempted to rob the victim at gunpoint and then shot at the victim. Although hit by gunfire, the victim returned gunfire in defense, striking both attackers.

After the incident, the victim called 911 while driving himself to the hospital. He reported the incident occurred off Kelford Drive, Anwood Drive area near Trotter Road. Deputies located the victim and provided medical aid until emergency services could transport him to a local hospital.

Local hospitals reported that two men had arrived with gunshot wounds. The two men, identified as Daquan Lewis Benjamin, 20, and Devin Moultrie, 19, were confirmed to be suspects in the shooting.

Booking records for Benjamin show him with the following charges:

  • Attempted armed robbery
  • Attempted murder
  • Kidnapping
  • Poss of a weapon during violent crime

I’m often nervous when completing online sales because one person is usually bringing money and the other person is bringing goods. One side often controls the meetup location, and people are often distracted inspecting the item or counting money. All this adds up to huge opportunity for theft and violence. I’ve heard some police departments recommend completing the transaction in the PD’s parking lot, which sounds like a good idea. At least select a location that has increased visibility and traffic, and if possible, come with a second person. Do you have specific tips for completing online transactions?
