Romans 8:28 – Really? All things?

Romans 8:28 reads as follows: “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

Every day is a test. Can I live as if that is true?

  • Did I just find an extra $1000 that I didn’t remember I have? Praise God for He works all things for good in my life!
  • Did I land a good business partnership? Praise God for He works all things for good in my life!
  • Is it a beautiful sunny day? Praise God for He works all things for good in my life!
  • Did I wake up healthy this morning? Praise God!
  • Did I finish a project I had been working on? Praise God!
  • Do I see God’s great beauty outside? Praise God!
  • Do I have a bounty of friends and family? Praise God!

These types of blessings are truly wonderful. To be honest, ever day is filled with a crushing avalanche of God’s great and profitable blessings.

The test comes when we experience the things that some might consider a curse. Can I stay faithful and believe that all things work together for good of them that love God, and are called according to His purpose?

  • An unwelcome diagnosis?
  • An unexpected bill?
  • A screw-up on my part that caused expensive damage to my house or equipment?
  • A relationship that is strained?
  • Slander?
  • These types of things happening to my wife or kid?

The real test is if I can still praise Him through the more difficult blessings. If I truly believe in God, truly believe in the scripture, and truly believe that God will work even these things for good, then I must praise Him. I must look for the good in these challenges. Perhaps they are there to grow me? Perhaps to uproot sin in my life? Perhaps to bring me closer to God? Perhaps it is all for God’s glory?

The test is whether I can stay faithful and thankful for the blessings God has provided — even the ones unbelievers would call a curse. It isn’t always easy, but I must constantly be on the lookout for my bad attitude, and turn it into a heart of thankfulness.

God is good.
