Madera Jewelry Shop Owner Defends Family

“He’s within his rights to own that firearm and did what he had to do to protect his family and his property there at the store.”

This statement according to Madera Police Sgt. Blake Short.

Video footage shows a group of 5 men dressed & masked in black waiting until someone exited the jewelry store so they could rush in. Once inside, one of the men held his hands out as if he had a pistol while others used what appear to be hammers to smash cases. “The employee, she believed that they were armed at the time” stated Short.

The store owner retrieved a pistol and began firing at the men. He fired a number of rounds at them while they were inside the store, then chased them out, and fired more round outside as they escaped in a dark sedan. Police do not believe the thieves were injured.

With the number of rounds fired, I’m a little surprised that no one is believed injured. I cannot imagine the stress and adrenaline dump the store owner experienced. I suspect if additional training might have helped him have better form which could have resulted in shots on target, plus perhaps better decision making to determine when the masked men were no longer a threat. One final observation: the thieves obviously chose the time of the robbery, and they chose a time after dark.
