LAPD Recommendations When Someone Breaks In To Your House

“If you’re in the house by yourself, start yelling, start making noise. That way everybody knows what’s going on, including your neighbors, your family members, and the suspect. Because suspects don’t want to get arrested for a home invasion. Most of the time once a suspects are breaking into a house hear or knows someone is in the house, they will generally run away.”

This sage advice comes from LAPD Captian Warner Castillo after a home break in resulted in a shooting.

I guess the burglar in this instance wasn’t one of the “generally” ones, since (according to the article) he didn’t leave after a struggle with the apartment’s occupant; he left only after he was shot in the chest. I also wonder how often neighbors come to the assistance of victims.
