A tragic story comes out of Houston.
Some boys were playing the age-old game of ringing the doorbell at night, then running away. Around 11pm, they rang the bell on a blue & white home, and the owner came out shooting. One of the boys was shot in the back and collapsed while running toward his own home.
Police say that the circumstances don’t seem to support a self-defense claim.
Tragic.
I recall playing this type of game with friends as a kid. Occasionally someone would come out of their home fairly upset, looking for us, presumably with the idea that they would turn us in to our parents. I never would have thought we could have been killed as a result of our not-so-funny game.
If a homeowner is legitimately in fear for their life, perhaps coming out with a strong light might help identify whether the doorbell ringers are a threat or not. The story in this case makes it appear as if the resident simply came out shooting at scattering kids.
