Imagine you see a stranded motorist on the side of the road at night, and stop to help. Now imagine that upon stopping, the attempts to take your car and attacks you. This would be an absolute nightmare.
However, it’s what happened to a man in Mississippi recently. In this case, the good Samaritan shot and killed the would-be-carjacker.
Perhaps a strong flashlight in the eyes of the carjacker might have helped this Samaritan determine intent or more effectively defend himself — I don’t think I have the facts necessary to make a determination. But I will say that if I do attempt to help someone, I’m likely to use my handheld and watch for an attack from the “stranded motorist” or even from nearby bushes.
