Open Carry Gone Wrong

In Las Vegas, a man was shot with his own open carry pistol.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officials said that a man entered a business in late afternoon exhibiting erratic behavior. A customer was inside the business with an open carry firearm, which the suspect attempted to grab. This lead to a struggle in which the suspect gained posession of the firearm and shot the customer, then fleeing from the scene.

Police received a call at about 4:45pm, arrived on the scene, and rendered aid to the customer until medical personnel arrived. The customer was pronounced dead at the scene. Other officers found the man suspected of the shooting a block away, and have booked him into detention on a murder charge.

It’s important to remember that every time you’re carrying and get into a fit, then you’ve made it a gunfight. A gun is now present in the altercation. Whether carrying concealed or not, this applies. I prefer concealed carry to reduce the chance a passer by knows I’m armed. There are no absolute protections against firearm takeaway, but concealment can make takeaway more difficult.

Do you open carry? If so, does this story give you pause?

  1. Absolutely wild, this is why I strongly recommend NOT open carrying, even at a public 2A event. You give up the element of surprise if you do, and from what I’ve seen, mastering a surreptitious draw might be much more practical than a sub 2second bill drill.
