Psalms 86: Unite my heart to fear thy name

These words from Psalms 86:11 struck me this week.

Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.

The plea starts with “Teach me thy way.” Understanding is the beginning of doing. Understanding of the Lord’s way is the beginning of doing right.

The verse continues with “I will walk in thy truth.” The Lord is truth. Learning His ways is to learn truth. It is the Lord’s truth, not anyone else’s.

The plea to the Lord is to “unite my heart.” This reflects a desire to always be of a singular direction. This implies that there is never a thought other than unity, and this lack of divide would promote peace.

The object is “to fear thy name.” This reflects an absolute reverence toward God. God’s law is an absolute law. God’s authority over life is also absolute. And His holiness is… well… absolute. One who fears God’s name will do anything to please Him.

I find the “unite my heart” to be a particularly interesting phrase, implying oneness and peacefulness in simply doing what God commands. This is a peace I seek after.
