“Did I really just see what I just saw?”

This story from Polk County, Florida highlights the need to properly process a situation after waking up.

It was just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday when Coles said he woke up to the sound of his dog barking.

“He actually had my daughter’s book bag on,” John Coles said.

“As I looked out of my room door from my bed, I seen a Caucasian male literally peeking down the steps,” he said.

“I double-checked,” Coles recalled. “I seen him first, then I was just like no way.”

“I got back into bed and I was like, ‘hold on,’” he said. “‘Did I really just see what I just saw?’”.

So Coles said he grabbed his gun and confronted McGuire.

“I didn’t really want to shoot the man, but he kind of came forward as I was standing down here with him at gunpoint,” he said. “So I shot him, and I told him don’t move again or it’s going to be again.”

Stories like this don’t have much in the way of details. I wonder if John Coles’ hallway had enough light for him to properly see and identify the potential threat. Thankfully, he had time to get into bed, process what he saw, get back up, obtain his firearm, and confront the individual. In my opinion, having a good handheld or pistol light when investigating sounds in the house might be a stronger course of action.
