It’s been a while since I’ve mentioned some of my favorite whiskeys. Without ado, here are 5 different bottles that I’ve enjoyed recently.
I’ve recently had a chance to try this $179 bottle from Blue Run. It starts with a 6-year bourbon, then mixes in whiskeys “from the upper reaches” of their respective rackhouses. I enjoy Blue Run Reflection as well, but this whiskey is much more mellow & smooth, but still having that strong bourbon character.
This $900 bottle of whiskey knocked my socks off. I hadn’t tried the Willett Estate Single Barrel before, seeing only the “pot still” labels in their distinctive bottles. I’m no whiskey expert, but I think this is right up there with the revered “Pappy” brands. Strong, smooth, complex. This whiskey is saved for special occasions at my house.
Blue Run Reflection is a staple around my house at around $99 / bottle. It’s always good, and easily approached neat. This has more bite to me than the “Trifecta” from the same label, but it’s also almost half the cost. If I need to give a bottle to someone I care about, this is an easy go-to.
When I want all the flavor that a high proof whiskey provides, I often reach for a bottle of Stagg. I’ve sampled a number of different batches. I know there are cult followings around a few. If you can find one around $300 dollars, I think it’s a bargain. Though it seems lately prices on these have gone up. As a side note, I had my first taste of Stagg at dinner at Shot Show last year.
Heaven’s Door bourbon continues to be one of my favorite less-expensive labels. I drink my whiskey neat, so I want at least a certain level of sophistication and reduced “bad” flavors. Heaven’s Door consistently provides. A couple years ago, they had a cask strength version under $100, which I thought was quite good. The bottle pictured here is about $60. Though I used to enjoy rye, I tend to appreciate the bourbons more from Heaven’s Door.
If you’re curious where I purchase my whiskey, I often do it from Del Mesa Liquor because they ship to my location, have a good selection, and have always resolved any issues that have arisen.
I do NOT receive commission on any of these items and am not affiliated with this liquor store. However, for convenience, here are direct links to each:
